The film Roger Ebert’s Nick Allen described as a “story with such affection for all of its characters, and that feels to come from an emotional savviness” and with a “tone that suggests intrinsic understanding… a carefully made film that has its own BS detector,” the multiple festival award-winning feature film THE YEAR BETWEEN and NAMI CHICAGO, a non-profit dedicated to fighting the stigma and discrimination around mental illness, have joined forces to ask an important and timely question:
What can be learned from a Year Between?
In THE YEAR BETWEEN, writer-director Alex Heller, inspired by her personal  journey living with bipolar disorder for the past 10 years, tells the story of a college sophomore who is forced to move back home after having a mental breakdown. Faced with a surprising diagnosis and a jarring return to the Illinois suburbs, Heller’s “Clemence” has to learn how to live with her well-meaning but frustrated family and find balance in a world that seems hellbent on thwarting her. 

According to Alex Heller, telling the story of THE YEAR BETWEEN provided her with one way to heal. Whether spotlighting family dynamics or tackling the stigma of mental illness, medication, therapy, depression, anxiety, or any mental and often invisible condition, she was able to explore both the gravity and the levity of her own situation at a specific time in her life and we invite you to do the same. Research has indicated that just watching the film creates a more open environment to share, learn, and grow from one’s own experiences.

We are able to service in-person requests for NAMI facilitators and the filmmakers as availability permits. Pricing is TBD, will be negotiated with speaker, and must cover travel expenses as needed, including but not limited to: parking, mileage, reimbursements, airfare, airport transfer, and private lodging.
